NEW YEARS EVE

OK My Dear Friends
I can now let the wrapping off of the gift. I am co-hosting a Jamfest with my partner, Benji Rosenzweig in putting on the Ultimate Detroit Music New Years Party.
So with out further ado, NOW MORE THAN EVEN PRODUCTIONS in partnership with WHY YOU JAM presents:
A PRIVATE NEW YEARS EVE PARTY featuring
Brando and Friends http://www.myspace.com/brandoandfriends
Brando is well known as a guitar and string virtuoso, who cut his teeth in jamband scene the critically acclaimed Electric Magi. He has appeared on stage with Steve Kimock, Garaj Mahal, the Everyone Orchestra and ekoostik hookah Brando has continued to be a studio musician with Matt Keil, ekoostik hookah. Catfish Mafia Greg Aranda and Blackswamp Ramblers as well as releasing solo material. You may be surprised when you listen to your favorite local band and learn that Brando did some of the dub work. His current band Brando and Friends plays all things Jerry Garcia, Grateful Dead, Allman Brothers, Led Zeppli and even the sound of Motown where it mixed with the jamband scene
Flophouse Band www.flophouseband.com
I met these guys at the Detroit Music Awards this past spring. I was immediately taken. They are the true embodiment of the Detroit Jazz Funk Soul sound. I say DEEEEEEEEEEEEETROIT because these boys hail from the blue collar roots of the downriver area. When they hit the Stage, they hit it hard. And you cannot help but get off your ass and dance. I have been on a personal mission to spread this band to the masses. Now, you all can come join me and see what you think.
and last but not least
Covert Operations http://www.covertopsband.com/
Dallas and the Boys (I say the boys with love because Derek, Kedree and Damon Young are siblings; and lets not leave out Allistar) have been kicking it around the scene for quite a while now. They are the hometown boys that did well. They have toured nationally and have been featured at some of the bigger festies such as hookahville, 10K Lakes and tons of big festivals at Nelson Ledges. Dallas is one of the kindest souls I know. The sound of Covert Ops is contagious. They take a simple jam and just build layers and layers of music into. While their sound has influences of some of our favorite jambands, I have to admit as a long time fan, though, it’s their own unique sound that draws me.
Our show is a PRIVATE party, with tickets costing $30. Since this is a private show, we are not bound by Bar time. So, who know what time the event will go on to.
Where Magnetic Recording (formerly RKS Studios). 17 W Lawrence Street Pontiac ( one block north and west of 7 N Saginaw Street) Folks this is a state of the art recording studio with a 128 track recording board in the back of venue. Bands from all over the country come here to record. The front of the venue has a stage and amble dance area. In addition, there is an audio booth and a video booth to help, with the best computer graphics around, create the ultimate ambient soundscape for your pleasure.
Cost $30 prepaid. We are setting up various payment options right now. Light food and drinks will drinks will be provided. A portion of the money will be donated to local charity
So, we hope to see y'all there to help us ring in the NEW YEAR Detroit Jamband Style
Much love,

Must see show Thursday

Hi There
I know we all are being festive and what not. But, I would be remiss to not mention that Grace Potter and the Nocturnals will be playing the Magic Bag on Thursday.
I first saw Grace at the Langerado Music Festival this past spring. I took them in while hanging out with members of Railroad Earth, their crew and mgmt. I was impressed with her energy. She can play a mean piano and guitar. I felt a bit of Janis Joplin in her, sans the booze and drugs.
I then saw Grace at Dunegrass. Upfront and in the flesh. I am telling you there were many converts that day.
Here is a link to a very recent show. www.archive.org/details/gpn2008-12-06.km184.flac16
Let's show support for her here in Ferndale
And Stayed tuned . . . . I am putting on a New Years Show in Pontiac with my Partner Ben Rosenzweig. Photos by up and coming photographer Drew Bender and a live audio visual extraganza that will blow your socks off. Just working out the final details with licenses and what not

Matisyahu Flobots. The Fillmore What can I said about this Orthodox Jew who is a rapper and reggae frontman with a super tight band that has not been said before. Well, for me, he is a little personal. I have had the opportunity at two Langerado Festivals to hang out with him. One, I got to "learn" with him. The put up a Shabbat tent and allow the hippy Jews to come together and experience their faith. This past March, I got to say Kaddish for my dad at a festival. Unreal. What is unique for me about Matis is the deeper space he gets into when he is doing his music. Some say (Update included), you find your higherness in music. Matis does. GO SEE THIS SHOW

Brando and Friends. Dick O'Dows Brando, the former front man for the Electric Magi, has been deeply influenced by Jerry Garcia, Steve Kimock and Dickey Betts from the Allman Brothers. In the current version of the Friends, he is doing a musical tribute to the Jerry Garcia Band. For those of us in the Big D, Jerry was fond of the Motown sound and had put a lot of it into his repertoire. But see Brando is just not satisfied with the Jerry sound. So, you might find some BB King, Carlos Santana, and others icons that created the Jamband sound. And now, Brando is playing his originals. Time to dust the dancing shows off and go boogie.

The Next Few Days

Hey Now
I am slowly working my way back into Update mode. I have had three trials since late August, one going three weeks. But, I would be remiss to not try to get the word out, BTW, the Update turns 45 on Friday. So, I am not sure what show I will attend, but I have many ones to partake in.
I will not be on Email from Tonight through Sundown tomorrow. It is Yom Kippur and I will definitely be going into some prayer. I take this time to pray for myself and also my community
Anyhow, here we go . . .
TONIGHT
MSTRKRFT ROYAL OAK MUSIC THEATRE
Sonya Kitchell The Ark
TOMORROW
EOTO w/ Aleph-1 The Blind Pig This is the drum and percussion section of String Cheese Incident. Michael Travis and Jason Hann. This project is a radical departure of what they did with their former band. This is all electronica and ambiance. If you want to dance your ass off, go to this show. These guys were a late night favs during the past two festival seasons. http://www.myspace.com/eotomusic
Ben Folds The Fillmore
Stereolab The Crofoot
Joe Satriani and Mountain Royal Oak Music Theatre
October 10-Miko Day ;>)
Mason Jennings-A Live Nation Feature Show St Andrews My source, Monica Baker at LN, sent me a special email on this one. Apparently, this singer song writer has been doing quite a bit for himself. From being hand selected to play some Dylan tunes in a movie to being back by Jack Johnson, I am seeing this man has been quite busy. Here is a nice article on him. www.jambase.com/Artists/11423/Mason-Jennings/Bio
Macpodz The Blind Pig You all know I love these boyz So does Moe who had them on their last tour. This past year, the Podz have started to blast off on the national scene. Huge festivals and major inroads in the west and the northeast. I am fearing the day will come soon, when we will not be able to see them at the Pig.
Covert Operations The Small Planet East Lansing. I usually do not post a show out of SE Michigan. But shoot, I love Dal and the boyz and really to see the name SMALL PLANET on any website just tickles me. Truth be told, the Update graced the stage of a few incarnations of the Small Planet as one of the percussionist with Assembly Required on sitting in with Bop Harvey, Pickle Brown Betty or the Jah Kings Gone are the dayz . . .
October 11
Brando and Friends Dino's Ferndale Brando is still playing all things Jerry Garcia. He recently has been working in some of his originals from the Electric Magi days. Also some new originals. BTW, the Update has been known to sit in with this band, particularly when they are playing at Dinos.
My Dear Disco The Blind Pig
The Misfits Harpos
Old 97's St Andrews
The Providence, Ludo and others Clutch Cargo's
Midtown Underground Fifth Avenue Royal Oak
October 12

Bruce Springsteen Free Show 10/6-EMU Stadium

Hot off the Press folks (announced at 6:02 am today)
The Boss will play a free acoustic show at Oestrike Stadium at Eastern Michigan University this Monday. Gates are at 3 pm and the show is expected to occur at 4:30 pm This is being billed as a rally for Barack Obama, our next president (my words)
I had the opportunity to see the Rock the Vote show when it came here in 2004. They hit 11 states in 11 days. Gov Grandholm and Sen Carl Levin were in my row. Yes, the Update does have his privileges LOL. If you recall this event, there were shows going on simultaneously in our state. Some got Neil Young. We got Springsteen and REM
Anyhow, Bruce Springsteen at a political rally is not going to be your boppy dancefest. But, for those of us that want to feel the true grit of this country, an acoustic Bruce Springsteen is a must. I would expect him to play a lot of the Nebraska album along with something he may have penned just for this run. He actually worked some of the material he wrote on the Rock the Vote run into his show repetoire.
So, come out and support Barack Obama and get some great music at the same time.
