Detoit Music Update/Metro Times Movie Ticket Giveaway-Taking Woodstock

Hello Music Luvers
My dear friend Anne Kelly, the ace classified rep from Metro Times, has gifted me with 3 pairs of tickets to an exclusive showing of the Taking Woodstock for Thursday August 28 at the Birmingham 8 Theatre. As you know MT is the premiere alternative newspaper with hundreds of thousands of regular readers. Its writers have won huge awards and prizes in the journalism circles and the paper is a dear friend of our fine city.
So, here's the deal. The premiere is at 7, but you have to get there early. Anne tells me once the house is full, that's it. If you win, you must be there early. I will notify the winners on the specifics, once I determine the winner.
So, the first three responders, who answer the below trivia question win. You and your friend/companion/spouse/strange thing/whatever will be mine and MT's guest.
So here goes the trivia question. If you follow my blog, you will get the answer. Hint, you can go to http://detroitmusicupdate.blogspot.com for help.
What band ,that was an essential part of the East Lansing, Detroit, Kalamazoo, Ann Arbor,
Grand Rapids landscape from the mid 80's to early 90's , who also played one of the 1992 Clinton Inauguration Parties will, after a 16 year hiatus, be reuniting at Rick's American Cafe in East Lansing, MI, on November 13 and 14th
Hint: one of the former members is now a dentist in Berkley, Michigan.
Good luck . . . . .
Come join and add shows, show revues, MP3's and comments . If you have a band or know a band that you wish to spotlight and the band plays in the 313, 248, 586, 734 and 810 area, sign up and share the love.

Summer Ain't Left Yet

Hey Now
So the forecast this weekend tells me the first hint of Fall is in the Air. The Maple in front of my house has some leave turning. Yesterday, I went up to Upland Hills Ecological Awareness Center (www.uheac.org) to help prepare the land for our Sweatlodge scheduled for tomorrow. (BTW if there is any interest, we will be sweating tomorrow at 10 am up at the Center). While I was there, I say some scarlet leaves on the ground. Having said that, there is still plenty of Summer left, which means Music, Sweet Music . . . .

So for some of you looking for a last minute outing:

the Hoxeyville Music Festival http://www.hoxeyville.com/ in Wellon, MI starts today. And what a lineup. Some local friends (Ragbirds and Macpodz) along with some great national acts (Greengrass Bluesky, Galactic, Hot Buttered Rum, Todd Snider-to name a few) will be there for your dancing pleasure. I wish I could be there. But other things call.

There is also the Original Originals Music Festival going on at Willow Ranch is Southwest Michigan. http://www.michiganpeacefest.com/maps_page.htm for directions. Covert Operations is heading the festival on Friday Night and co producing it for the weekend. You can go to their website for lineup and more information. http://www.covertopsband.com

Ypsilanti Heritage Festival I got word on this one late. I was told that local bluegrass favorites the Dragon Wagons were playing, but looking at the entertainment lineup, I could get no confirmation. Here is the lineup link. http://www.ypsilantiheritagefestival.com/entertainment.htm

I am going to be doing break down of the usual Labor Day Stuff in a later version. But I did want to draw attention to this little ditty going on in Ypsilanti. My friend Don is putting on a non profit music festival at Riverfront Park in Depot Town Labor Day weekend (Sept 4th and 5th to be exact0. Several of our friends. The Ragbirds, Hullaboo, The Macpodz (this time with a MC) and Back Forty are going to be there. But I am psyched to see Daisy Mae and Seth Bernard, along with That Guy 1 to be featured in the mix. For more information see www.the-jamboree.com
Karl Denson and the Tiny Universe 9/13 The Magic Bag

Many of us know what today is. On this day, I like to post a few poems I have written for him over the years. Jerry impacted us all in many ways. Happy Birthday, old friend Enjoy . . . .

ODE TO JERRY G.
Yesterday was our friend Jerry's birthday.
Next week he's gone 5 years.
He helped us all see the way.
Sometimes there are still tears.
I'm glad he left the world tryin’ to make it clean.
His voice is still in my head,.
I know of nothing more serene.
Than those sweet licks from the proverbial leader of the DEAD.
He's jammin' with Old Pig, Keith, Bill G, Dick and Brent.
Having a great laugh over chocolate sundaes and an egg cream soda.
Man, that scene must be keeping Heaven a little bent.
Riding the blissful wave, one huge open coda.
Well, you old fat man, I really miss you.
No one down here has even come close.
I am not that blue,
Can't be that morose.
I really want to thank you for just being.
I will always hold the memories dear in my heart.
No matter what the critics said, you were always worth seeing.
Jerry G from the end to the start.
Take care my dear friend,
Say hello to all,
My love for you will never end.
YOU ARE THE BEST THING I EVER SAW.
With love and light. In memory of our dear friend, JJG

The Portal Opened
Many years ago you opened the portal
That door is still open today.
We all owe a lot to you
Did we take too much?
We stand here on this austere day
Full of memories, smiles and tears
Straining to recall the cry of the Tiger and the Wolf
Feeling a special warm embrace inside.
Well the beat does go on
And with it so do we.
We have made it in spite of what we said
The music never stopped.
People still gather, now a little more of a scattered tribe
But still one, the vibe is still alive.
All carrying the standard set at that open gate.
It is ALL good!
