Some Shows for this week

This one was done yesterday 9/29. I failed to put it up on the Blog. The Umphrey's McGee give away is over

Okay someone needs to tell work to chill, cuz its interferring with ma fun. Actually, I am glad to be working at all.

But hey there are some shows that must be on the radar for this week.

TONIGHT. Mike Gordon for that obscure Rock band Phish plays at the Blind Pig. Special Guest Jacob Fred Jazz Odyssey as the opener. They are great in and of themselves.

Moby at St Andrews.

Tomorrow Buju Banton CANCELLED. Wow check out the press on this one . . .

http://www.freep.com/article/20090929/ENT04/909290333/1322/Majestic-cancels-Buju-Banton-show

looks like there will be a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Benefit Concert in its place.

Catfish Mafia at Pat O'Briens in Saint Clair Shores. These guys are a decent bluegrass ensemble. Well worth checking out.

Friday UMPHREY'S McGee with our dear friends the Macpodz opener UM surely has taken the jamband and festy scene and made it its own. They made my late night Rothbury (2 late night sets) spectacular. I could not believe where the band is going with its music.

And since I and my friend Dianna from Live Nation love you, the Update has two tickets to give away to the first 2 "callers." Trivia time peeps: What band did the Grateful Dead open up for on my 13th Birthday 10.10.76?

Also Friday Living Colour The Magic Bag

Uncle Kracker The Machine Shop in Flint.

Saturday. JJ Grey and Mofro. wsg Shooting Jennings and Earl Grey. St. Andrews. JJ Grey and Mofro has been a regular on the Jamband scene for years. I gotta tell you, he has changed his lineup a bit lately. A change for the better. JJ is deep in the soul of the music and he is playing a lot of guitar now. I can tell you that this is one to see.

I will try to squeeze out a few more this week. But back to the work zone.

I have a blog that accompanies this email.

a few for the Weekend and Karl D ticket giveaway

Hey Now
What's happening freaks? Wasn't Labor Day weekend the best? For those of you who did not make it to the Jamboree at Riverside Park, you missed a blast. Hats off to Don for pulling this one off. Idyllic setting by the Huron River, great music and great friends. One helluva gig for the first time. Don promises more for next year and overnight camping. This will definitely be on my festy map for next year.

Okay someone needs to show me how to import this huge list (which is BCC'd) into my Blackberry. I say this because I think I am too late. Dear friend and music master Willy Wilson is doing a ticket giveaway to the Karl Denson and Tiny Universe show Sunday night at the Magic Bag. Here's what Brother Willy has to say and the ticket Giveaway:

Before he took the spotlight with his Tiny Universe, and prior to his emergence with the Greyboy Allstars, Karl happened to play saxophone on a couple massive albums from the son of a certain sitcom star from the 70’s/80’s hit TV show, the Jeffersons. The first two people to name the artist and albums that Karl appeared on as well as the (actual) name of the famous parent of the aforementioned rock star will win a pair of tickets to see Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe this Sunday at the Magic Bag. Karl’s new album is tremendous. You can hear clips by visiting his website: http://www.myspace.com/karldensonstinyuniverse

Karl D is the sick funk throwdown. I have been hearing the new album on Sirius Channel 17, JAM ON and I gotta say that I got to turn on the chill cuz I am afraid I might get out at a stoplight and dance. And damn, I cannot afford another ticket. So come join us all Sunday at the Bag for a big D Soul Shakedown.

Other Cool Stuff this weekend

Dally in the Alley. Tomorrow. What can I say about this event, now in its 32nd year that has not been said before. All I know is that I was turned on to it for the first time in 1991 and 18 years later, I am still going. I tell my friends from far around that I have not experienced a street fair like this one anywhere. It is quintessential Detroit and a celebration of true diversity. When I first started going, it was limited to the Alley bordered by Cass, Forest, Second and Third. It has well expanded beyond and this is a good thing. There is even a Kid's Fair this year. Here is the link to the musical lineup for the day. http://www.dallyinthealley.com/music.html

Art and Apples Fair this weekend in Downtown Rochester. Hope I am not getting soft in my old age, but I did see there was some music this weekend. Might be good for those of you of the family persuasion. Here is the music schedule http://www.artandapples.com/page4.php

54th Annual Plymouth Community Fall Fair this weekend in Downtown Plymouth Ok Miko you're scaring me. Another big community and music fair. This one has a carnival , car show and music. Here is the main music schedule www.plymouthfallfestival.com/Entertainment/Kellogg Park Entertainment.htm

The Ragbirds 9/25 Our dear friends come back to roost back home for the release of their new CD, Finally Almost Ready This album was produced by Railroad Earth's fiddle virtuoso Tim Carbone. I have recently seen the Ragbirds perform cuts from the album. Hats off to Erin aka Ebird, Randall, TJ, Tim and Dan for this amazing piece of work.
BUJU BANTON 9/30 Majestic This is some serious Roots and Reggae music

Mike Gordon 9/29 The Blind Pig Our dear phriend from Phish graces us with his presence in this rare small club appearance. http://www.blindpigmusic.com/Pages/savemoney.html ticket sales

Umphrey's McGee 10/9 Michigan Theatre On sale Now These guys MADE my Rothbury and they should make your evening.

East Lansing 80's Bar Band Blow Out 10/9 Rick's American Cafe East Lansing
Here's what my old friend Patrick Filbin is saying about this event
Miss the East Lansing Music Scene from the 1980s? Your time has come: FRIDAY, OCTOBER 9th @ 8:00 p.m. at RICK's AMERICAN CAFE in EAST LANSING. The bands: Walnut Club. IMP. Breeze. The Way-outs. All-Star Jam Session....and more. All night. Old friends. Hot music. East Lansing...again!

Government Mule wsg/ Jackie Greene 10/25 Royal Oak Music Theatre Yes the Jackie Greene of Phil Lesh and Friends. He puts on a great show of his own. On Sale Now via the web. http://www.mule.net/tour/mule.php

RAILROAD EARTH wsg/ the Ragbirds 10/31 At the Royal Oak Music Theatre. You all know how I feel about RRE. They are sick. If you go to my Facebook Page, you will see pics from the 8/4 Toronto Show. But wait, the Ragbirds open for them. I asked Tim Carbone, in Toronto and Erin and Randy Last Sunday, if we could see another sit in like we had at Rothbury. I do believe it can happen. Tim and Erin jamming fiddle will be SICK

Dead Again 10/31 The Magic Bag. I saw this band on Jerry Day 8/1. They are comprised of many former members of Rubber Soul. I am not usually one to get too juiced about a Dead cover band, but I was really actually pretty stoked about these folks. They are not really recreating the Dead (not to be confused with the facsimile comprised of the surviving members of the GD-its just that the GD will always be the Dead to me), but interpreting it. And they do a great job. This would be a great nightcap for the Railroad Earth show. Maybe Jeremy can keep the Bag open a little later that night so that y'all can come in for some more dancing. But this is not to say, that maybe for some of you, this will be the place to be for All Hallow's Eve.

bop (harvey) Reunion Shows 11/13-11/14 Rick's American Cafe East Lansing. I am still awaiting more details about the reunion of the Band that shaped the scenes of East Lansing, K'zoo, Traverse City, Grand Rapids and Detroit from the mid 80's to the early 90's. Believe me when I get it, it will be here

Widespread Panic 11/24 Royal Oak Music Theater Onsale 9.15 http://wsptickets.musictoday.com/WidespreadPanic/calendar.aspx

Lots of choices people. Hope to see y'all real soon . . . . .

Its Labor Day Weekend. My Beloved Spartans return to the gridiron. Yeah, that other Michigan team plays too. Hopefully the Tigers can hold on to first place. Hey Miko, its this Sports Center or a Music Update. Of course , its a music update and we begin with

A Ticket Alert from the Ace Team over at Live Nation
Looks like the legendary John Paul Jones from Led Zeppelin has formed a Super Group.
Them Crooked Vultures
Thursday October 8 at the Fillmore Detroit
All Ages welcome, doors at 7:00 PM
Tickets $ 47.50 - on sale this Saturday at 10AM at Livenation.com

In a 2005 an interview with Mojo magazine, Foo Fighters front man Dave
Grohl said, "the next project that I'm trying to initiate involves me on
drums, Josh Homme (Queens of the Stone Age, Kyuss) on guitar, and John
Paul Jones (Led Zeppelin) playing bass. That's the next album. That
wouldn't suck." Today, that band is a reality. Called Them Crooked
Vultures, this unlikely combination has played a mere handful of live
gigs before embarking on their first US tour, which makes a stop at the
Fillmore Detroit on October 8.

Them Crooked Vultures debut CD Deserve the Future will be released in
2010.

Labor Day Weekend Festivals

The Jamboree
My friend Don is putting on a non profit music festival at Riverfront Park in Depot Town Labor Day weekend (Sept 4th and 5th to be exact) For more information see www.the-jamboree.com Several of our friends. The Ragbirds, Hullaboo, The Macpodz (this time with a MC) and Back Forty are going to be there. But I am psyched to see Daisy Mae and Seth Bernard, along with That Guy 1 to be featured in the mix. Also the Update's very own super shutterbug, Drew Bender will be the official photographer. http://www.flickr.com/photos/andrewbender/Tell him you are a fan of the Update and you might just get flicked.

Detroit International Jazz Festival
As usual, this event, celebrating its 30th year, is over the top. Way too many artists to give credit to, but I'll try to outline a few. Here is a nice printable guide, that is highlighter friendly. http://www.detroitjazzfest.com/09mapgrid.pdf Friday night kicks off with Chick Corea, Stanley Clarke and Lenny White. Stanley is an amazing bass player. I have seen him with Herbie Hancock, Branford Marsalis and a slew of others, and by himself. We all know about Chick. Saturday brings back the legendary Dave Brubeck. But a special treat will be that his sons will be performing as the Brubeck Brothers, in their own set. Can Dad come out and jam? Another good one looks like Measured Chaos. Described as a blues fusion-bringing jazz, blues and rock together. Hey, isn't that what a jamband does? Saturday features Bernie Maupin’s Dolphyana. Bernie, a woodwind virtuoso, played with Miles Davis on Bitches Brew and was an original member of Herbie Hancock's Headhunters. In this project, he assembles an allstar lineup to pay tribute to Eric Dolphy. Sunday Straight Ahead, the all female jazz group, a festival favorite, makes it return. Marcus Belgrave, the 2009 recipient of the Jazz Guardian Award, makes a special return visit to his hometown, this time bringing an Allstar Quartet. The famous Booker T. (yes the very one who played with the MG's) will be here and has a new album to boot. Saxophonist Wayne Shorter will play with a quartet. Last for Sunday, Pete Escovedo Latin Jazz Orchestra featuring Juan Escovedo. Monday Carolyn Striho-Rayse Biggs Project Her music has been described as "dreamy psychedelia" and comes close to jazz, folk and rock. Chuchito Valdés Quartet all things Cuban. Mambo , Danzon and Timba. T. Money Green’s Roadwork This veteran created the bass sound of Hip Hop for the likes of Dr. Dre and Snoop Dogg. He brings that power and energy to our city. Monk on Monk This is the son of Thelonious Monk. T.S. Monk is the drummer and bandleader of a 10 piece ensemble. They will bring previously unknown compositions that were found as the younger Monk researched the work of his famous dad.
As I said, so much music to try to compress for this venerable festival.

Arts Beats and Eats
This juggernaut has developed its own storied history and continues, in spite of a horrible economic downturn, it carries on. I have heard that the event is not free this year and that there is a $2 entry fee. I checked the website and have not been able to verify that.
The music of this event would be hard to capture. But I'll try. Here is a link to the lineups. http://www.artsbeatseats.com/Beats.aspx

Friday
Mainstage LOS LOBOS, the Reeferman, Candlebox Other stages Deadstring Brothers, The Orbisuns, Laith Al-Saadi (blues guitar), Giftus (funk rock) and Jan Krist. Chime in on any others. Saturday Mainstage Stewart Francke Joan Jett & The Blackhearts Other stages Jam Samwich, friends of the Update and definitely a jamband, Robin Horlock Band, Barbara Peyton Band, anyone that attends Michigan Pridefest has seen her kick it out as a fest closer and then take the show over to Comos for more fun. Persuasion, Third Coast Kings. Nadir Distorted Soul Nadir's post Detroit Music Awards party jam session has become legendary as has the 144o Collective. Nadir is an amazing musician who just brings it to the stage. I love this man and his band. Sunday Mainstage (its gospel Sunday) Angie Stone Other stages. The Update's dear friends Back Forty, Broadzilla, The Muggs, The Tim Diaz Band, Impact 7, Mary McGuire, friend of Grevious Angel and Billy Brandt, Sierra Leone, Sky Covington Monday Mainstage Phil Vassar Puddle of Mudd Other Stages Beatlemania Live, Ultraviolet Hippopotamus, another jamband friend of the Update, Rachael Davis and the Updates very dear friends, Flophouse a kick ass funk band

Hamtramck Labor Day Festival
Who says the scene sucks in the Big D. Yet another festival to intake on Labor Day weekend. http://www.hamtramcklaborday.com
You all can take a gander. The Polish Muslims can be fun. The Orbisuns will be here. Monday features world beat music, some of my favorite. I may be interested in Odu Afrobeat Orchestra.

There are a few shows to see in the area.
I have spent my efforts going over the festivals that feature music. Some shows though are OAR at Meadowbrook on Friday. Covert Operations on Saturday at Callahan's, Tesla at DTE on Saturday, Steely Dan, Saturday Motorcity Casino SoundBoard; ZZ Top at the Fillmore, Saturday, Steely Dan on Sunday at Motorcity Casino SoundBoard and the Ragbirds on Monday at Concordia College.
Come join and add shows, show revues, MP3's and comments . If you have a band or know a band that you wish to spotlight and the band plays in the 313, 248, 586, 734 and 810 area, sign up and share the love.
