Hi. Where have I been. Well a little up and a little down. As some of you know, I lost my mom in early December. That threw my life into a tailspin and hyperspace all at the same time. Took some time to regroup and stay connected to the people close to me. Also, had to travel back and forth to Maryland and get back into the swing of thing. Time heals and I am close to all around me. On a very good note, my long time best friend, love of my life, queen and confidante and I got engage last Saturday. No wedding date as of yet, but you know that Miko will throw a super soul shakedown to celebrate. More details as they emerge.

We have some great shows coming. I am in the business with my partner Ben Rosenzweig. You can find us at whyyoujam.com. In addition, my own company NOW MORE THAN EVER PRODUCTIONS, along with partnering with WhyYouJam, will be doing other projects including some work with my dear friend, Don Sicheneder. I would also like to give a shout out to my dear friend Brandon Creasman and his friends, our friends. Brando tragically met his demise on March 1. He left behind a son Porter, his old friend Jen Monette (Porter's mom) and his long time love Kirsten. He left a lot of music behind, but several of his music projects continue on. In particular, the American Gravy Company is getting some wings. Brando used to host an open mike night at the Black Lotus Brewing Company, in Clawson. www.blacklotusbrewingco.com. ; This is not a typical open mike night with poerty and balladeers. No, this one really is the stomping ground of some of the area's hardest hitters, who just want to go up and work out some chops. Steve Szajna (pronounced Shina), Brando's long time producer and collaborator has gladly agreed to take the reins of this every Monday night extravaganza. So come out and play. We will also be doing some benefit shows for the Lorien Foundation, a trust that Brando had set up for Porter to meet his needs. This is not a klezmer show. It is more like contemporary Jewish music meeting Led Zeppelin, the Jefferson Airplane and Allman Brothers. Yosil Rosenzweig has been playing and writing jewish music for over forty years.

-he wrote, played and was a close friend of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. The most influential Jewish songster since King David.

-2 of Yosil's songs won "chassidic music festival" (Iisraeli equivalent of the grammy's) 1976 Pitchu Li, 1978 Hu Yiftach Libeinu.

-Both songs were recorded and played, by the Diaspora Yeshiva Band.

-Ruby Harris a world renowned fiddle player and original member of the DYB and a VERY hot commodity in the Chicago blues, jazz and bluegrassmusic scene

Nice Plug for the Macpodz and me on a "rampage"

As many of you know, the update LOVES the Macpodz. Have since the first time I heard them a few years ago. Well apparently so does Glide magazine. Here is a current piece on them:

And what better way to congratulate the band. Go see them at Churchills in Flint this Friday. Too far?? Well, then the Ark next Friday.

Okay now I need to get on the podium. I tried to last night, but thanks to my new fangled email program, my stuff got zapped. This email /blog is dedicated to local music and local venues. More and more national acts are writing us off here because they do not think we have a draw. Examples: moe is doing its 20th anniversary tour. They are on a second tour of the midwest within a year. When we were bypassed in the fall, we were told we'd get a winter date. Guess what no date. This is in spite of the fact that we damn near sold them out at the Michigan Theater when they came in February 2006. Rob, from the band, commented that our venue was epic. Another: Trey Anastacio, the frontman of Phish, is doing his first solo tour in years. There are several dates in the Midwest. In spite of a great showing at the Phish show at Cobo in November, no Trey show for us.


Here's the deal. We have great bands here. All have followings. Besides the Podz, the Ragbirds, Covert Operations, Dragon Wagon, Brando and Friends, Grievous Angel, Jill Jack, Mr Shz, Lucky Brown, the Ultraviolet Hippos, just to name a few. If we want touring bands to come here (and our local venues DO need that push), we got to show the powers that be, that we have a viable music community here. And I don't know about you all, but I am self employed and do not have the funds to tour like I did before. That along with a wonderful change in my life circumstances, is having me stay here.

Bottom line: We need to support the live music scene here NOW MORE THAN EVER!!!! We are DETROIT ROCK CITY damnit!!!

Okay off the podium. Before I go, I want to draw attention to an up and coming band. Dead Again. You know these guys from their tenure in Rubber Soul/Simplicity. All the members are in several bands. There "Dead" band is getting some wings. They are not a note for note copy band. Rather, an interpretator of the music. And they do a damn great job. They will be doing an Acoustic show on 1/28 at Pat O'Briens in St Clair Shores 22385 East 10 Mile Road. A phew short days from now, our beloved Phish will be hitting the famous or infamous, depending on your perspective, Cobo Hall. Some of our local phriends plan to keep the party going after the show.

SO, I would be remiss if I did not tell you of some of the phun.

Detroit, MI 48201 I gotta say that I really dig this group and I think they do a marvy job of interpreting the Grateful Dead. Many people went and caught their Halloween show at the Magic Bag and told me it was just grand. You may know some of the Band members as several did a stint in Rubber Soul.

THE MACPODZ Ann Arbor's beloved Jazz Funk ensemble will be kicking it at the Hard Rock Cafe at Campus Marcus in Downtown Detroit. Nick, Ross, Brendan, Jesse and Griffin are seriously some of the most talented musicians I have laid eyes on. They will surely keep you dancing. DJ Frank Raines Innerphonic at Reliv-Formerly Asylum. This might be an opportunity to show all the lot ragers, why the D is the home of the Electronic Music Festival Yeah, I know its called Movement. Whatever . . . .

Catfish Mafia will be at Pat O'Brien's in St Claire Shores. These guys are quite the bluegrass outfit. I have seen them over the years and can tell you there will be some stompin'

So, there is an off day for Phish, the next day. Let's show the out of towners, that MOTOWN is the place to get your groove on. Spread the word on these local shows. Something tells me some of these pholks will be milling around before the epic show.

Some Shows for this weekend

Howdy

Sorry to be so absent, but the dang day job calls. In a soft market, I gotta work whenever possible.

But that does not mean that there are not some good shows to be noted for this weekend.

First, in Fashionable Ferndale, on Freaky Friday the 13th, Ekoostik Hookah invades the Magic Bag. These guys have been around for a long time and they are one of my favs. Dave Katz on Keys and Vocals, alone with Steve Sweeny on Guitar and John Mullins, vocals and guitars fill the nucleus of this band. Cliff Starbuck aka Cliffy the Shit ;) on bass and Eric Lanese on drums round out the ensemble. I was stoked to recently hear them on Sirius Jam ON. This will be a jam filled night.

Also Friday and Saturday, the triumphed return of bop harvey. After a 16 year hiatus, the legendary band returns to its original state at Rich's American Cafe in East Lansing. The ska reggae band that shaped the scene of East Lansing, Kalamazoo, Grand Rapids, Traverse City and the Big D from the mid 80's to early 90's. They relocated to Providence Rhode Island and had the pleasure of being invited to President Clinton's Inauguration Party in 1992. Sorry to all, but I will be at this show Friday night . . . The reunion is a must see. If you don't get to go, don't dispare. My company, NOW MORE THAN EVER PRODUCTIONS is in active negotiations for a Detroit area gig. Let's see how these go.

Friday-My friends the Macpodz reinvade the Blind Pig. Nice to see the boyz at home. We get a chance to see them later this week.

Friday Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band plays the Palace of Auburn Hills. Hey I grew up with Bruce because I am from Central Maryland. He give us a special treat in that he is going to play the Born the Run album all the way through at this show. I understand its an exclusive for this night and its a nice present to the Big D from the Boss . . . .

Friday- Jam Society at AJ's Cafe in Ferndale. Go see the ever talented teenage guitar hero Ari Teitel light it up with his band. Some people say the drummer Amir Edwards is the best in the Big D and has surpassed Skeeter Valdez. Amir is only 14 or so. You be the judge. Go over to AJ's at 240 West Nine Mile and let me know . . . .

Saturday Go check out Lonny Brooks at Callahan's in Auburn Hills. He is a blues legend and has graced the stage of the Annual Anti Freeze Blues Festival, that will be right after New Years.

Friday UMPHREY'S McGee with our dear friends the Macpodz opener UM surely has taken the jamband and festy scene and made it its own. They made my late night Rothbury (2 late night sets) spectacular. I could not believe where the band is going with its music.

I can tell you that this is one to see.

What's happening freaks? Wasn't Labor Day weekend the best? For those of you who did not make it to the Jamboree at Riverside Park, you missed a blast. Hats off to Don for pulling this one off. Idyllic setting by the Huron River, great music and great friends. One helluva gig for the first time. Don promises more for next year and overnight camping. This will definitely be on my festy map for next year.

Okay someone needs to show me how to import this huge list (which is BCC'd) into my Blackberry. I say this because I think I am too late. Dear friend and music master Willy Wilson is doing a ticket giveaway to the Karl Denson and Tiny Universe show Sunday night at the Magic Bag. Before he took the spotlight with his Tiny Universe, and prior to his emergence with the Greyboy Allstars, Karl happened to play saxophone on a couple massive albums from the son of a certain sitcom star from the 70’s/80’s hit TV show, the Jeffersons. The first two people to name the artist and albums that Karl appeared on as well as the (actual) name of the famous parent of the aforementioned rock star will win a pair of tickets to see Karl Denson’s Tiny Universe this Sunday at the Magic Bag. Karl D is the sick funk throwdown. Other Cool Stuff this weekend

Dally in the Alley. Tomorrow. What can I say about this event, now in its 32nd year that has not been said before. All I know is that I was turned on to it for the first time in 1991 and 18 years later, I am still going. I tell my friends from far around that I have not experienced a street fair like this one anywhere. It is quintessential Detroit and a celebration of true diversity. When I first started going, it was limited to the Alley bordered by Cass, Forest, Second and Third. It has well expanded beyond and this is a good thing. There is even a Kid's Fair this year. RAILROAD EARTH wsg/ the Ragbirds 10/31 At the Royal Oak Music Theatre. You all know how I feel about RRE. They are sick. If you go to my Facebook Page, you will see pics from the 8/4 Toronto Show. But wait, the Ragbirds open for them. I asked Tim Carbone, in Toronto and Erin and Randy Last Sunday, if we could see another sit in like we had at Rothbury. I do believe it can happen. Tim and Erin jamming fiddle will be SICK

Dead Again 10/31 The Magic Bag. I saw this band on Jerry Day 8/1. They are comprised of many former members of Rubber Soul. I am not usually one to get too juiced about a Dead cover band, but I was really actually pretty stoked about these folks. They are not really recreating the Dead (not to be confused with the facsimile comprised of the surviving members of the GD-its just that the GD will always be the Dead to me), but interpreting it. And they do a great job. This would be a great nightcap for the Railroad Earth show. Maybe Jeremy can keep the Bag open a little later that night so that y'all can come in for some more dancing. But this is not to say, that maybe for some of you, this will be the place to be for All Hallow's Eve.
