What a weekend for music. I am in awe. And to the dads out there, many outdoor shows to enjoy on your special dad. Happy Father's Dad, men.

I wanted to put this out there. I took some heat recently from someone out in the community who was pissed that I was not advertising a particular band. I replied, informing the writer, that due to the size of the Update and the amount of material that I cull through to find shows, it is helpful that the band has a presence on the web. Dear friends The Jill Jack Band plays Sunday night. The best is national favorite JJ Grey and Mofro on Sunday. I flippin' love Mofro and they have been at a ton of national festies. You really need to just go through the website and see who's playing. But I can tell you tons of our local friends are playing. Many of them have links at the end of this blog/email. Man, its been a good spring. Nice and warm. Makes you thing of all the good music out there that will be coming soon.

The Macpodz and Lucky Brown, are going to be playing a night of sensational music at the Magic Bag Tonight. The Podz are old and dear friends of the Update. They have gotten some national traction opening for bands like Moe and playing huge festivals across the US. They will bring their smooth rifts and fiery funk at you all night. LB also are friends of the Update. Music has a twinge of reggae and R&B in it, but their sound is their own. This is a local music extravaganza .

Might want to check Chene Park this weekend. Erykah Badu is there tonight. Babyface is there tomorrow.

Also Breathe Owl Breathe a staple at the Annual Dunegrass Festival in August will be at the Ark tonight

Don't forget Michael Franti and Spearhead this Tuesday at the Royal Oak Music Theatre.

Hello Again

A little self promoting. My partner Benji Rosenzweig and I are producing a show this Sunday at Magnetic Recording Studios in Pontiac. Here's the poop:

Now More than Ever Productions and Why You Jam present an evening of Jewish Music, celebrating Lag B'Omer. Featuring Yosil Rosenzweig and the Kosher Gravy Company. Special music guests Ruby Harris and David Appelman. Kosher Gravy Company is none other than our local favorites the American Gravy Company, featuring members of Jam Sammich, the Electric Magi and Brando and Friends.

This is not a klezmer show. It is more like contemporary Jewish music meeting Led Zeppelin, the Jefferson Airplane and Allman Brothers. There will be plenty of open ended jamming with the unique sound of Joe Stanley on Guitar, Marcus McGlown on Drums, Mark Betz on Bass, Ruby Harris on violin and mandolin; David Appelman on woodwinds.

Yosil Rosenzweig has been playing and writing jewish music for over forty years.

-he wrote, played and was a close friend of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. The most influential Jewish songster since King David.

-2 of Yosil's songs won "chassidic music festival" (Iisraeli equivalent of the grammy's) 1976 Pitchu Li, 1978 Hu Yiftach Libeinu.

-Both songs were recorded and played, by the Diaspora Yeshiva Band.

-Ruby Harris a world renowned fiddle player and original member of the DYB and a VERY hot commodity in the Chicago blues, jazz and bluegrassmusic scene

Greeensky Bluegrass wsg Rootstand. Magic Bag. This is a CD release party for Michigan's premiere bluegrass band. The won the 2006 Telluride Bluegrass Music Competition and have been playing there and major music festivals for many years. Rootstand is another heavy hitting band and personal friends of mind. They combine reggae, bluegrass, folk and funkgrass all into the same sound.

Phish 3D movie. This is Phish in 3D from the Festival 8 show they did last Halloween. Its playing at Emagine in Canton and the MJR in Sterling Heights. I have been to the latter to see Avatar and can tell you, the place was built for 3D movies.

Ultraviolet Hippopotamus Savoy. Ok I love the UV Hippos and they are tearing up the midwest jam scene. Kudos to Donny for landing them at the Savoy, the hottest new jam club in the area

Harlem Majestic Cafe This appears to be part of their ongoing Motor City Funk Night. Should be a blast.

Hi. Where have I been. Well a little up and a little down. As some of you know, I lost my mom in early December. That threw my life into a tailspin and hyperspace all at the same time. Took some time to regroup and stay connected to the people close to me. Also, had to travel back and forth to Maryland and get back into the swing of thing. Time heals and I am close to all around me. On a very good note, my long time best friend, love of my life, queen and confidante and I got engage last Saturday. No wedding date as of yet, but you know that Miko will throw a super soul shakedown to celebrate. More details as they emerge.

We have some great shows coming. I am in the business with my partner Ben Rosenzweig. You can find us at whyyoujam.com. In addition, my own company NOW MORE THAN EVER PRODUCTIONS, along with partnering with WhyYouJam, will be doing other projects including some work with my dear friend, Don Sicheneder. I would also like to give a shout out to my dear friend Brandon Creasman and his friends, our friends. Brando tragically met his demise on March 1. He left behind a son Porter, his old friend Jen Monette (Porter's mom) and his long time love Kirsten. He left a lot of music behind, but several of his music projects continue on. In particular, the American Gravy Company is getting some wings. Brando used to host an open mike night at the Black Lotus Brewing Company, in Clawson. www.blacklotusbrewingco.com. ; This is not a typical open mike night with poerty and balladeers. No, this one really is the stomping ground of some of the area's hardest hitters, who just want to go up and work out some chops. Steve Szajna (pronounced Shina), Brando's long time producer and collaborator has gladly agreed to take the reins of this every Monday night extravaganza. So come out and play. We will also be doing some benefit shows for the Lorien Foundation, a trust that Brando had set up for Porter to meet his needs. This is not a klezmer show. It is more like contemporary Jewish music meeting Led Zeppelin, the Jefferson Airplane and Allman Brothers. There will be plenty of open ended jamming with the unique sound of Joe Stanley on Guitar, Marcus McGlown on Drums, Mark Betz on Bass, Ruby Harris on violin and mandolin; David Appelman on woodwinds.

Yosil Rosenzweig has been playing and writing jewish music for over forty years.

-he wrote, played and was a close friend of Rabbi Shlomo Carlebach. The most influential Jewish songster since King David.

-2 of Yosil's songs won "chassidic music festival" (Iisraeli equivalent of the grammy's) 1976 Pitchu Li, 1978 Hu Yiftach Libeinu.

-Both songs were recorded and played, by the Diaspora Yeshiva Band.

-Ruby Harris a world renowned fiddle player and original member of the DYB and a VERY hot commodity in the Chicago blues, jazz and bluegrassmusic scene

Nice Plug for the Macpodz and me on a "rampage"

As many of you know, the update LOVES the Macpodz. Have since the first time I heard them a few years ago. Well apparently so does Glide magazine. Here is a current piece on them:

And what better way to congratulate the band. Go see them at Churchills in Flint this Friday. Too far?? Well, then the Ark next Friday.

Okay now I need to get on the podium. I tried to last night, but thanks to my new fangled email program, my stuff got zapped. This email /blog is dedicated to local music and local venues. More and more national acts are writing us off here because they do not think we have a draw. Examples: moe is doing its 20th anniversary tour. They are on a second tour of the midwest within a year. When we were bypassed in the fall, we were told we'd get a winter date. Guess what no date. This is in spite of the fact that we damn near sold them out at the Michigan Theater when they came in February 2006. Rob, from the band, commented that our venue was epic. Another: Trey Anastacio, the frontman of Phish, is doing his first solo tour in years. There are several dates in the Midwest. In spite of a great showing at the Phish show at Cobo in November, no Trey show for us.


Here's the deal. We have great bands here. All have followings. Besides the Podz, the Ragbirds, Covert Operations, Dragon Wagon, Brando and Friends, Grievous Angel, Jill Jack, Mr Shz, Lucky Brown, the Ultraviolet Hippos, just to name a few. If we want touring bands to come here (and our local venues DO need that push), we got to show the powers that be, that we have a viable music community here. And I don't know about you all, but I am self employed and do not have the funds to tour like I did before. That along with a wonderful change in my life circumstances, is having me stay here.

Bottom line: We need to support the live music scene here NOW MORE THAN EVER!!!! We are DETROIT ROCK CITY damnit!!!

Okay off the podium. Before I go, I want to draw attention to an up and coming band. Dead Again. You know these guys from their tenure in Rubber Soul/Simplicity. All the members are in several bands. There "Dead" band is getting some wings. They are not a note for note copy band. Rather, an interpretator of the music. And they do a damn great job. They will be doing an Acoustic show on 1/28 at Pat O'Briens in St Clair Shores 22385 East 10 Mile Road.
