ABOUT THE HEADLINERS:
ART BRUT is an eccentric, motley bunch who have more in common with Half Man Half Biscuit and Pulp than they do with their oft-compared influences The Fall. Vocalist Eddie Argos (an ex-goth obsessed with Jonathan Richman and Vincent Van Gogh) had previously been in a band, The Art Goblins, in his hometown of Bournemouth. Their stage show would see him playing a vacuum cleaner and escaping from a sack. They sounded not unlike cult Glaswegians The Yummy Fur and had songs such as I Wanna Be Johnny Dean and Disco. Another project was The Welsh Elephant, who penned the should-be-classic Fuck The MSP (which contains the catchy refrain Nicky Wire can suck my cock!).
Produced by Frank Black over twelve days last December, new album Art Brut vs. Satan is the record Brut-o-philes have been waiting for since debut single ‘Formed A Band’ illuminated the musical universe back in 2004. Tuneful, truculent and more on the button than University Challenge’s Gail Trimble, it’s the sound of Art Brut at their most confident and confrontational. www.myspace.com/artbrut
THUNDERBIRDS ARE NOW! are an electropunk band from Detroit. The band is heavily influenced by 1980s new wave and other neo-post-punk acts like Les Savy Fav.
Make History, Thunderbirds are Now!'s 3rd full-length and second on Frenchkiss Records, does away with a band in full tail-chase and depicts one at it's peak: no longer stressing about what people might expect, but rather wearing their influences better than one of Interpol's tailored suits. "We live off of pop music," says singer/guitarist Ryan Allen. "Some Beatles for breakfast, a little Smiths for lunch, and the Pixies for dinner. Sometimes we'll have a little New Pornographers for a midnight snack." Further, "making an album full of melodies, actual choruses, songs in major keys it's something I think we all grew up with, so it was inevitable that we'd make a record like this. It's our chance to do right by our influences and by ourselves." www.myspace.com/thunderbirdsarenow
ADULT. is an electro band from Detroit, Michigan that integrates vocals with drum machines, analog synths and electronic/punk elements. They started releasing albums in 1998 under the pseudonymn “Plasma Co.” Initially, ADULT. members were unrevealed, but now it is known that the band consists of husband-and-wife Adam Lee Miller (formerly of Le Car) and visual artist Nicola Kuperus. The two members are also the founders of the Ersatz Audio record label. ADULT. started gaining fame after releasing all of their material independently and touring relentlessly in the U.S. They have also remixed other artists, most notably Felix da Housecat, Fischerspooner and Bis. Vocalist Kuperus (who is also responsible for the band’s album artwork and photography) has sung on the works of other electronic acts including Death in Vegas, Swayzak and Chicks on Speed. www.myspace.com/adultadult
DEASTRO started to make electronic music when he was 13 at his home in Sterling Heights, Mi. He since formed an electro band called Veleciraptor, which inspired the ideas for his current synthesized projects: Our Brother The Megazord and Deastro, which try to blur the lines between electronic and acoustic music.
Moondagger, Deastro's newest release, expands upon the positive electro-pop of Keepers—Deastro’s home-recorded opus from 2008—with the addition of a full band. Thankfully, the mercurial, prolific Chabot still seems blissfully unaware of his music’s genreless-ness. Thick, atmospheric production obscures bright, starry-eyed melodies; ecstatic synth squiggles dance around new-wave beats on songs about Nordics, toxic crusaders, and geometric shapes; arrangement ideas bounce off one another within ambitious song structures that swerve left, then right, then left again. And yet underneath all of their seeming irreverence, Deastro’s songs are breathtakingly down-to-earth—melodic slices of synth-led experimental pop whose energy builds with each iteration of the chorus, hitting emotional peak after emotional peak until they collapse in a heap. www.myspace.com/deastro

this week from the Update

Greetings Fellow Music Lovers

Man what a great summer its been. I have seen Phish 6 times and have two on deck. Went to Rothbury (coordinated the Yellow Balloon Group for the second year in a row) and saw String Cheese Incident reunite for a full show, plus a special sound check show and have seen scads of good local venue music. But I must ask, where is the summer heat. Hmm, someone forgot to tell the weather gods, it is the end of July.
There is more in store for this week and the weeks to come. Scads of local shows and even a few festivals. You know how I roll here, break it down real slow . . .

August Festivals worth seeing
Dunegrass Empire MI July 31-Aug 2 http://dunegrass3.org/?page_id=27
This festival has always been special to me. It has scaled back to its more local roots. Michigan and Midwest favorites The Macpodz, Covert Operations, The Ragbirds, Rootstand, My Dear Disco and the Ultraviolet Hippopotamus are featured. This show will also highlight some great local (Benzie and Grand Traverse County) pickers. I sure hope I can pull the time to make this show.
Hoxeyville Music Festival Hoxeyville MI August 21-23 Boy has Kalamazoo Michigan's Matty Beck (now of Passion Presents in Arcata CA and Phish Tour's Waterwheel) pulled the proverbial rabbit out of the hat. Matty is family to me and he has gone to the wall to bring an amazing lineup to this festival. Hot Buttered Rum, Greensky Bluegrass, Melvin Seals and JGB, ekoostik hookah, EOTO, Todd Snider, the Macpodz and Ragbirds just to name a few. This show will have it share of pickers too with Detour Bluegrass, Great American Taxi and Breathe Owl Breathe
Between Dunegrass and Hoxeyville, you could just plant yourselves upnorth for a few weeks. Plus I seem to get flyered with tons of little festies during August when I go to the bigger ones up there.
Shows down the line-stay tuned
Arts Beats and Eats and Detroit International Jazz Fest Labor Day weekend
Dally in the Alley Saturday September 13

OMG bop (harvey) reunion in November!!!!!

Hey Now
While East Lansing is far off and perhaps a forgotten place, to many of us, it was the center of the musical universe in the mid 80's to the mid 90's. Shoot, I sat in with a half a dozen or so bands during that era. Thomas Cooley Law School brought me to East LA, as we affectionately called it. And the quintessential band of that era is going to reunion. ladies and gentlemen I give you bop (harvey) So mark your calendars now, you are all coming to the regrouping of the sickest regional band in the land
from Stevie J and bop Central IT'S OFFICIAL. BOP (HARVEY) REUNION SHOWS SCHEDULED FOR NOVEMBER 13TH AND 14TH AT RICK'S AMERICAN CAFE, EAST LANSING MICHIGAN. After 16 long years, I never thought I'd see the day. Hope to see you all there. Stay tuned for details.
If you went to MSU from the mid 80's to the early 90's, you partied with one or more of the incarnations of bop (harvey). Even if you didn't, you know someone who did. Their shows were legendary. I saw quite a few. Join us for this sick evening.
Also check my blog http://detroitmusicupdate.blogspot.com for updates on this and many other great area shows.
bop til you drop

Zappa Plays Zappa

Hey Now
I get information from the strangest of places. I signed onto my Yahoo Messenger and there it was in bold advertisement. Zappa plays Zappa Tomorrow at the Sound Board at the Motor City Casino. BTW a great sounding venue if I must say.
It is weird that this venue is getting all these bands. MMW was there recently. I think it is a little big for the bands that they are booking. I am also concerned that if we do not go to these shows, then these bands are going to be reluctant to book here. So , hence a Catch 22. Support the bands because we need the agents to know we are serious about getting music here. But, go to venues that are not where we would like to see music.
Anyway, I say go if you have the time . . .
. Come join and add shows, show revues, MP3's and comments . If you have a band or know a band that you wish to spotlight and the band plays in the 313, 248, 586, 734 and 810 area, sign up and share the love.

I have had a great summer so far and that is why the blog has been on the low side. I saw Phish 6 times in June and just got down working the Rothbury Music Festival. I am a booth coordinator for a non profit. Also have squeezed in some music at the local venues. Ain't life grand

So I have been lobbying Jeremy at the Bag to get Greensky Bluegrass http://www.greenskybluegrass.com/ to town. It is finally happening. Yippee!!!!!!!!!!!They are playing this Saturday with special guests, our own Back Forty!!!http://www.backfortymusic.com/

So Miko, tells us more about Greensky. Well they used to be kinda local. They hailed from Western Michigan and played the Ann Arbor scene for quite a while. They are now considered one of the premier bluegrass/jamgrass bands in the land. They have won the prestigious Telluride Bluegrass Festival Band Contest in 2006, and regularly play with the likes of Tim Carbone from Railroad Earth, Tony Rice, Peter Rowan.Bill Nershi and Keith Mosely from String Cheese Incident,Del McCourey and his sons Ronny and Robbie, David Grishman and the Punch Brothers. But honestly they can stand alone. They have been tearing up the festy scene making appearances at the Allgood Festival, Rothbury, Langerado and Bonnaroo. They also play traditional bluegrass festivals. This is a must see band if you enjoy traditional bluegrass. But they are known to take some of jamband favorites, classic rock songs and even some Michael Jackson and give it there own extended play workover

I must also give a little plug for my friends Back Forty. http://www.backfortymusic.com/bio.html. I first laid eyes on them about four years ago. They had been playing the Ann Arbor/Ypsi scene and I had heard so much about them. They played a hootenanny with my friends the Ragbirds and Rootstand. When I saw them, I was hooked. When Colin plays the fiddle, you just want to rage. Dan on guitar and Andy on Mando/Guitar are the cat's meow. Now they play funkgrass so there are going to get you bumpin' and reelin'
Here's the best. My dear friend Willy Wilson from the Bag is allowing yours truly to offer 2 sets of a pair of tickets to this show to the first 2 people that reply to the email/blog. The show is Saturday July 11th. Tickets are 10 dollars and doors are at 8 pm.

Come join and add shows, show revues, MP3's and comments. If you have a band or know a band that you wish to spotlight and the band plays in the 313, 248, 586, 734 and 810 area, sign up and share the love.
