ABOUT THE HEADLINERS:
ART BRUT is an eccentric, motley bunch who have more in common with Half Man Half Biscuit and Pulp than they do with their oft-compared influences The Fall. Vocalist Eddie Argos (an ex-goth obsessed with Jonathan Richman and Vincent Van Gogh) had previously been in a band, The Art Goblins, in his hometown of Bournemouth. Their stage show would see him playing a vacuum cleaner and escaping from a sack. They sounded not unlike cult Glaswegians The Yummy Fur and had songs such as I Wanna Be Johnny Dean and Disco. Another project was The Welsh Elephant, who penned the should-be-classic Fuck The MSP (which contains the catchy refrain Nicky Wire can suck my cock!).
Produced by Frank Black over twelve days last December, new album Art Brut vs. Satan is the record Brut-o-philes have been waiting for since debut single ‘Formed A Band’ illuminated the musical universe back in 2004. Tuneful, truculent and more on the button than University Challenge’s Gail Trimble, it’s the sound of Art Brut at their most confident and confrontational. www.myspace.com/artbrut
THUNDERBIRDS ARE NOW! are an electropunk band from Detroit. The band is heavily influenced by 1980s new wave and other neo-post-punk acts like Les Savy Fav.
Make History, Thunderbirds are Now!'s 3rd full-length and second on Frenchkiss Records, does away with a band in full tail-chase and depicts one at it's peak: no longer stressing about what people might expect, but rather wearing their influences better than one of Interpol's tailored suits. "We live off of pop music," says singer/guitarist Ryan Allen. "Some Beatles for breakfast, a little Smiths for lunch, and the Pixies for dinner. Sometimes we'll have a little New Pornographers for a midnight snack." Further, "making an album full of melodies, actual choruses, songs in major keys it's something I think we all grew up with, so it was inevitable that we'd make a record like this. It's our chance to do right by our influences and by ourselves." www.myspace.com/thunderbirdsarenow
ADULT. is an electro band from Detroit, Michigan that integrates vocals with drum machines, analog synths and electronic/punk elements. They started releasing albums in 1998 under the pseudonymn “Plasma Co.” Initially, ADULT. members were unrevealed, but now it is known that the band consists of husband-and-wife Adam Lee Miller (formerly of Le Car) and visual artist Nicola Kuperus. The two members are also the founders of the Ersatz Audio record label. ADULT. started gaining fame after releasing all of their material independently and touring relentlessly in the U.S. They have also remixed other artists, most notably Felix da Housecat, Fischerspooner and Bis. Vocalist Kuperus (who is also responsible for the band’s album artwork and photography) has sung on the works of other electronic acts including Death in Vegas, Swayzak and Chicks on Speed. www.myspace.com/adultadult
DEASTRO started to make electronic music when he was 13 at his home in Sterling Heights, Mi. He since formed an electro band called Veleciraptor, which inspired the ideas for his current synthesized projects: Our Brother The Megazord and Deastro, which try to blur the lines between electronic and acoustic music.
Moondagger, Deastro's newest release, expands upon the positive electro-pop of Keepers—Deastro’s home-recorded opus from 2008—with the addition of a full band. Thankfully, the mercurial, prolific Chabot still seems blissfully unaware of his music’s genreless-ness. Thick, atmospheric production obscures bright, starry-eyed melodies; ecstatic synth squiggles dance around new-wave beats on songs about Nordics, toxic crusaders, and geometric shapes; arrangement ideas bounce off one another within ambitious song structures that swerve left, then right, then left again. And yet underneath all of their seeming irreverence, Deastro’s songs are breathtakingly down-to-earth—melodic slices of synth-led experimental pop whose energy builds with each iteration of the chorus, hitting emotional peak after emotional peak until they collapse in a heap. www.myspace.com/deastro
